Does L3Harris do layoffs?
Some of the biggest technology industry players have announced mass layoffs in recent months.
In most cases, companies aren’t legally required to pay workers or offer benefits once their employment ends. But they’re often motivated to do so to shield themselves from liability and to help defuse any hard feelings by tiding workers over while they search for new opportunities.
Many feel that severance is a very formal version of ‘Don’t go away mad, just go away’ while others feel it is a reward for being loyal.
You just got laid off from L3Harris. What should you do next?
Many companies are considering how much they have to give you so that you go quietly because when a person is laid off, this has an adverse effect on them. They try to soften that blow a little.
While the amount of severance a laid-off worker gets varies widely depending on the industry, company, and the employee’s tenure, exit packages tend to have some standard components.
Lets take a look at what to expect from a severance package when being laid off from L3Harris.
What’s in a severance package?
The most variable part of a severance agreement is the amount and duration of extra pay and benefits a L3Harris worker receives. Severance packages can include a mix of the following:
- Financial compensation
- Extension of health care and other benefits
- A portion of one’s bonus
- Accelerated vesting of stock
- Outplacement assistance or career coaching
- ‘We are seeing commonalities in things people are getting, but not the durations. We’ll see the extension of benefits beyond the termination date, but as far as what those values are it depends on the company. There is no standard.’
If your job loss is part of a mass layoff, the company is required by federal law to provide at least 60 days notice under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. Employees are entitled to full pay during the notification period, but in most other cases based on federal and state law, companies don’t have to pay severance at all. They can give nothing.
How is severance calculated?
Severance packages such as a week’s worth of pay per year of service while other companies may pay four weeks for every year of employment. That’s the formula — it’s the number of weeks you get per year. For example, a banking or financial services company can be expected to offer a couple of weeks of severance pay per year of service.
Don’t count on a bonus

AUSA 2024 — L3Harris has protested the Army’s decision to award Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) a contract to develop a fleet of deep-sensing spy planes — a move that SNC says will delay work on the program.
“L3Harris has filed a formal protest asking the U.S. Government Accountability Office to review the U.S. Army’s decision on the High Accuracy Detection and Exploitation System (HADES) contract,” an L3Harris spokesperson said in a statement.
“We carefully reviewed the information during the Army’s debrief process, which led us to challenge the HADES decision and request further analysis to ensure the proposal received an equitable evaluation. Our goal remains to ensure that mission operators receive the lowest risk and most capable solution available for an increasingly complex security environment,” they added.
In an interview with Breaking Defense today, Josh Walsh, SNC vice president of mission solutions and operations, described L3Harris’s “characterizations” as “inaccurate and incorrect.” He emphasized that the company believes it will prevail at the end of the process and that the delay caused by the protest is only temporary. Walsh confirmed the protest had been filed in September.
“We believe the protest is not technical in nature. There is no technical merit to L3Harris’s filed protest,” Walsh said. “We believe they are protesting a minor administrative issue that should not be grounds for the protest and delay such a critical program for the Army.”
The protest was filed on Sept. 16, GAO said, and the oversight agency has a deadline to deliver its verdict by Dec. 26. A GAO spokesperson said that by statute, the Army is required to order a work stoppage on the program until the dispute is resolved. The Army did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Aviation Week first reported the protest.
SNC in August prevailed over an industry team-up of L3Harris, Leidos and MAG Aerospace in the competition for the 12-year HADES contract with a ceiling of nearly $1 billion. GAO will now weigh in on the Army’s award and is expected to make a decision — either to dismiss, deny or sustain the protest.
The HADES effort calls for converting Bombardier’s Global 6500 business jet into an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) platform to replace a legacy fleet of RC-12 Guardrail turboprop aircraft. The Army eventually expects to field up to 14 of the jets, which will come with capabilities like moving target indication and signals intelligence.
The Army has previously tasked an array of companies with producing “bridging” aerial ISR assets designed, in part, to inform HADES requirements. Those efforts included:
Army officials anticipated that a losing bidder could protest the service’s HADES decision and planned to deliver the first jet to SNC in the October-November time frame once the protest window closed.
“We have to be cognizant that every perfor”.

L3Harris Technologies, Inc. is an American technology company, defense contractor, and information technology services provider that produces products for command and control systems, wireless equipment, tactical radios, avionics and electronic systems, night vision equipment, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C3ISR) systems and products, ocean systems, instrumentation, navigation products, training devices and services, and both terrestrial/spaceborne antennas for use in the government, defense, and commercial sectors.
The company was formed from the merger of L3 Technologies and Harris Corporation on June 29, 2019, which made it the sixth-largest defense contractor in the United States.
The “Harris Automatic Press Company” was founded by Alfred S. Harris in Niles, Ohio, in 1895. The company spent the next 60 years developing lithographic processes and printing presses before acquiring typesetting company Intertype Corporation. In 1967, they merged with Radiation, Inc. of Melbourne, Florida, a developer of antenna, integrated circuit, and modem technology used in the space race. The company headquarters was moved from Cleveland to Melbourne in 1978. In May 2015, Harris finalized the purchase of competitor Exelis Inc., almost doubling the size of the original company.
L-3 Communications was formed in 1997 to acquire certain business units from Lockheed Martin that had previously been part of Loral Corporation. These units had belonged to Lockheed Corporation and Martin Marietta, which had merged three years before in 1993. The company was founded by, and named for, Frank Lanza and Robert LaPenta in partnership with Lehman Brothers. Lanza and LaPenta had both served as executives at Loral and Lockheed. The company continued to expand through mergers and acquisitions to become one of the top ten U.S. government contractors. At the end of 2016, the company changed its name from L-3 Communications Holdings, Inc. to L3 Technologies, Inc. to better reflect the company’s wider focus since its founding in 1997.
Between 1999 and August 2021, L3Harris and predecessors spent $131.9 million lobbying for ICE radio procurement ($20,000), the Intelligence Authorization Act ($1,510,000), DHS fund appropriations for unmanned vehicles ($430,000), and night vision systems research ($20,000).
In 2008, 72 Iraqi civilians sued L3 Services and CACI for human rights violations including “torture; cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment; war crimes; assault and battery; sexual assault and battery; intentional infliction of emotional distress; negligent hiring and supervision; and negligent infliction of emotional distress.” A settlement was reached on October 10, 2012, which was the “first positive resolution to a U.S. civil case challenging detainee treatment outside the United States in the larger war on terror.”
